Me: I wonder how white nationalists tow the line rhetorically. Do they use similar obfuscation strategies as McInnes?
Member: My knee-jerk reaction is to say no because, if you’ve ever met Gavin, you would immediately get his sense of humor. But I can certainly see people not understanding where his humor stops and where some White Nationalist jargon begins. If you are immersed in the world of trolling, you can easily detect the difference between what is meant as satire and what is meant as actual racist rhetoric. We refer to people who don’t get the difference as ‘normies.’
Earlier this year I followed up with this Proud Boy. I’m pleased to report that he has since left the group. Earlier this year, this Proud Boy sent me a photo of Hammerskin nations members. Hammerskin Nation (HN) is one of the most violent skinhead organizations in America.

He was proud of the group kicking them out, but was confused as to why they thought they were welcome. Many members insist Proud Boys are not a “dogwhistle” for more violent factions, but their actions suggest otherwise.Here is a link to the mini thread on the subject, with screenshots from August 2018 Proud Boy Patriot Prayer Rallies.These rallies were where Enrique Tarrio’s “Pinochet” Tee Shirts were advertised.
